The Seton Hall University (SHU) Jewish-Christian-Islamic Virtual Media Library wanted to create a web site devoted to Jewish-Christian, Jewish-Muslim, and Muslim-Christian interaction. SHU approached BZA with the challenge of building a complex timeline that could be integrated into the web site and be easily updated by SHU. After diligent research, BZA recommend the use of “Timeline,” an open source program that is available through the SIMILE Project from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Timeline is a DHTML-based AJAXy widget for visualizing time-based events. It is like Google Maps for time-based information and can be viewed though a web browser without out any software installation. Viewers can easily pan the timeline by dragging it horizontally. Events on the timeline are clickable providing details about events along with associated photographs or illustrations. The timeline is populated with data by pointing it to an XML file. BZA customized the user interface and designed a color pallet that facilitates the finding of information. We also trained the client on how to update and upload images in the proper directory. Check out the timeline at http://tltc.shu.edu/vml/timeline/webapp/jewish_muslim_timeline.html.
Timelines such as this can be used for a number of different applications. There is even a web timeline that displays the recent history of Chinese product recalls. Other applications include:
