At last month's Miva Merchant Annual Conference I had the pleasure of listening to Tim Ash, author of the book "Landing Page Optimization." Tim shared his knowledge and beliefs about understanding exactly what your particular website visitor audience will respond to. Much of what Tim talks about is based upon metrics and testing. Many times simple changes can result in improved conversion in the range of 20-40%. I thought I would share of few of those deadly sins.
When a home page is cluttered with so many choices and so many calls to action that the site visitor is unclear what they should do. For example, Click Here for a Demo, Sign-up for Trial Version, Call Today, Video Tour Click Here, etc. Too many visual distractions. Your landing page should make it clear what you want visitors to do.
Long e-mail forms with many fields can be a turn off to a potential lead. Ash recommends that for every field on an inquiry form you should ask yourself, "Is that field totally necessary in order to respond to the request?"
Lack of trust and credibility symbols on a web site, especially for e-commerce sites, can stop visitors in their tracks. Your "trust & credibility symbols" should be visible and prominent. Trust symbols can include your safe site logos and secure checkout logos. Credibility symbols can include award logos, reseller icons, member organizations, etc.

What every artist wants is a professional site that showcases their work via an animated gallery, a site that they can maintain themselves, and an online store in which to sell their work.
